Most people know that we moved to Seattle from Portland for my doctoral internship year (final year of clinical training before I finally receive my degree). I’ll be honest, I was very resistant to move to Seattle. I had no desire to leave the home that I loved in Portland, and I certainly didn’t want to be farther from our families. However, I discovered that the summers here are perfect (70s & 80s – no triple digit heatwaves!), and fall is beautifully crisp and bright! It’s so similar to Oregon and it makes me feel like I’m “home” even though I still don’t totally have my bearings.
Here are three things that I absolutely love about our home for the year:
1. So many outdoor adventures!
Hiking, water sports, mountain activities, biking/running paths. Anything your heart desires, Seattle has it! We’ve particularly enjoyed running the Sammamish River Trail. There’s also a company that rents kayaks and bikes and connects our suburb to Seattle proper, so we’re looking forward to doing that once the weather gets nice again (time just got away from us this summer).
2. Family friendly events!
Outdoor concerts, movie nights under the stars, wineries/vineyards that welcome kiddos. We’ve definitely taken advantage of frequenting several wineries (favorites: Columbia Winery and Chateau Ste. Michelle), and going to concerts and movies as a family. If you follow me on Instagram, every glass of wine has been from one of these establishments, and we went to multiple concerts at Chateau Ste. Michelle with a toddler in tow.
3. Culture is everywhere!
I mean this both in regard to access to events (e.g., symphony, art, exquisite food of every genre), and the people that inhabit Seattle and its suburbs (large refugee population, so many languages and cultural influences). I love that we are immersed in so many cultures and that we’re giving Hanly the opportunity to recognize the benefits of differences in individuals.
Thanks for making us feel so welcome, Seattle!
